This week Master Dai sat down with Lena, a manifestation podcaster who has spent six years on vision boards, affirmations and scripting, to answer the questions people type into Google every day: why isn't my manifestation working, does meditation help, and how long does it really take?

Why isn't my manifestation working?

Most people who search "manifestation not working" have already done everything the books tell them. They know what they want. They have written it down, pictured it, said it out loud every morning. So they conclude that something is wrong with them, or with the method.

Master Dai answered Lena's question with one of his own: when you write your affirmations at night, how tired are you?

Her answer — "honestly, exhausted" — is the answer almost everyone gives. And it is the whole problem.

"Manifestation is not a wish. It is energy turning into action, and action turning into a result. Your vision board knows exactly where you want to go. But it cannot give you the energy to get there." — Master Dai

In the Chinese tradition that energy is called qi. Every intention you have has to be carried by it: the energy to get up early, to make the call, to keep going on the day nothing seems to happen. When qi is low, desire has nothing to run on. You don't lack desire. You lack energy.

Does meditation help with manifestation?

It's the most common advice in the manifestation world: meditate more. Master Dai doesn't disagree that meditation is good — it makes you calm. But, as he put it, calm is not the same as full.

"You can sit very quietly on an empty tank. Very peaceful. Still empty."

Sitting meditation quiets the mind. Qigong is meditation that moves: breath, body and mind working together, and instead of only settling the mind, it gathers qi. That is the difference people notice first when they practice every day — not a vision or a sign, but something plainer. They wake up with more left in them. That surplus is what you manifest with.

How long does manifestation take?

This is the question with the most searches and the most dishonest answers. Seventeen days, thirty days, "by the next full moon." Master Dai refuses to give a number:

"Anyone who gives you a date is selling you a date."

What he will say is this: results follow energy, and energy follows practice. If you spend energy faster than you make it — late nights, constant stimulation, stress you never discharge — you will wait and wait. Not because the universe is slow, but because you are running on empty. Turn that around, make more than you spend, and you will feel the change in your own body first. That part you don't have to take on faith. You can test it.

Does manifesting really work, or is it just positive thinking?

Lena played the skeptic here, and Master Dai's answer may surprise people who expect a qigong master to defend every kind of manifesting:

"Positive thinking alone? No. A thought with no energy behind it is a seed on a stone. Beautiful seed. Nothing grows."

Chinese tradition describes a person in three layers — jing, qi and shen: body, energy and spirit. Most manifestation teaching starts at the top, with the mind, and skips the two layers underneath. When the body and the energy are strong, the mind doesn't have to strain, repeat or force. It decides, and things begin to move.

Where do you start if you've tried everything?

Smaller than you think. Master Dai's suggestion is ten minutes a day:

  • Stand comfortably, knees soft, shoulders relaxed.
  • Breathe slowly and let the breath reach low into the belly.
  • Move your hands slowly, as if holding a ball of air, and notice the warmth gathering in your palms.

Then do the one thing most manifestation advice never asks of you: don't believe it — test it. Practice every day for a few weeks and pay attention to how you wake up. When you have energy left over at the end of the day, your goals stop feeling like a fight. That is when manifestation starts working.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my manifestation not working even though I visualize every day?

Visualization sets direction; it doesn't supply the energy to act on it. If you are visualizing at the end of an exhausting day, the intention has nothing to run on. Build energy first, and the same intention starts turning into action.

Is meditation enough for manifestation?

Meditation brings calm, which helps. But calm and full are different states. Qigong combines the stillness of meditation with gentle movement and breathing that gather energy, so you are both settled and resourced.

How long does it take for manifestation to work?

No honest teacher can give you a date. What you can observe quickly is your own energy: how you wake up, how much is left in the evening. That changes first, and results follow it.

What is qi?

Qi is the Chinese name for the life energy that moves you — the difference between a day you push through and a day you move through easily. Qigong is the practice of gathering and circulating it.
