How Does Manifesting Work? A Tai Chi Teacher Asks Master Dai

A tai chi teacher whose students keep asking about manifesting asks Master Dai how manifesting works, whether it is real, whether it works without action and whether it can backfire - and gets three words to start with: picture, power, step.

This week Master Dai sat down with Marcus, who has taught tai chi for twelve years. Lately his students have started asking him about manifesting, and he never knows what to tell them. So he brought their questions in exactly as people type them: how does manifesting work, is manifestation real, does it work without action, can it backfire, and how do you manifest what you want?

How does manifesting work?

Marcus expected something mysterious. Master Dai started with something ordinary.

"The same way anything you have ever built works." — Master Dai

Think of anything you have actually made happen: a garden, a business, a move to a new city, a skill you now have. It went through the same stages every time.

"First there is a picture. Then there is energy behind the picture. Then the energy turns into steps, and the steps turn into something real."

That is the whole sequence: picture, power, steps, result. Most manifesting advice spends almost all of its time on the first stage. You write the vision, you script the outcome, you visualise until you can see it with your eyes closed. Then you wait.

"Most people stop at the picture and call it manifesting. A picture with nothing behind it is a daydream."

A daydream is not a bad thing. Every creation starts as one. But a picture on its own does not move anything. What moves it is the second stage — the energy behind it — and that is the stage almost nobody trains. Master Dai put it in one line:

"Manifesting is a picture with power behind it."

Is manifestation real?

Marcus asked the blunt version his students ask: is manifestation real, or is it just positive thinking?

"It is real. And it is not positive thinking."

Then Master Dai pointed around the studio.

"Look around this room. This chair, this microphone, these lamps. Every one of them was an idea in someone's head before it was here. That is manifestation, and it happens every day."

Seen this way, the question "is manifestation real?" almost answers itself. Ideas become things all the time. The room you are sitting in right now is full of them. What people are really asking is something else: why do some ideas make it into the world and others don't?

"The real question is not whether it exists. It is whether you have enough energy to carry your idea all the way into the world."

Positive thinking works on the picture. It makes the picture brighter and more pleasant to hold. It does nothing for the energy that has to carry it. That is why you can think positively for months and still be standing in the same place. Everything around you was once an idea. Energy carried it here.

Does manifestation work without action?

This is one of the most searched manifesting questions of all, and Master Dai's answer was short.

"No. And that is good news."

Good news, because it means the missing piece is something you can actually do something about. Much of the manifesting world treats action as a compromise, as if the "real" method is to visualise and let it arrive, and doing things is what you fall back on when the method fails. Master Dai sees it the other way round.

"Action is not the opposite of manifesting. It is the last part of it."

So why do so many people want a version without action? Because of how action feels when you have nothing in the tank.

"When your energy is full, the next step doesn't feel like pushing. It feels obvious. When your energy is empty, every step feels heavy, so people look for a way to skip it, and they call that manifesting."

Most people have felt both sides of this. On a full day, you send the email, make the call, start the thing, and it barely registers as effort. On an empty day, the same email sits in drafts for a week. The task did not change. You did. Don't skip the step. Fill up until the step is obvious.

Can manifestation backfire?

Some of Marcus's students are honestly worried about this: can manifestation backfire? Can you attract the thing you are afraid of?

"What backfires is fear dressed up as a wish."

Here is what Master Dai means. Someone wants to keep their relationship, their job, their savings. On paper that is a wish. But if they spend the whole day picturing losing it — rehearsing the bad conversation, running the worst case — then most of their attention, and most of their energy, is going into the fear.

"Energy goes where your attention goes. So notice where your attention lives most of the day. That is what you are really building."

This is not a reason to be afraid of your own thoughts. A worried thought now and then does not "attract" anything. It is about where your attention lives — what it returns to, hour after hour. That is where your energy is being spent, and energy spent on something always builds something. A useful check: at the end of today, ask yourself what your attention spent the most time on. Energy goes where your attention goes. Put it on what you want to build.

How to manifest what you want

The last question was the practical one: if someone wants to start today, how do they manifest what they want? Master Dai answered in three words.

"Picture, power, step."

  • Picture. One clear thing you want to create, not a list. One picture gets all of your energy; ten pictures get a tenth each.
  • Power. Ten minutes to gather your qi (气, the energy you live on) before you think about it. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and your knees soft. Raise your hands in front of your belly as if holding a ball. Breathe normally and keep your attention in your palms. When it wanders, bring it back.
  • Step. From that full feeling, take one real action toward the picture the same day. Small is fine. Real is the point.

"Then do it again tomorrow."

There is no deadline in this and no promise about when anything arrives. Creation does not run on a schedule anyone can sell you. What you can change is the part in the middle, the power, and with it how heavy or obvious your next step feels. That part is trainable, and you can watch it change in your own days without needing to believe anything first.

Practice with Master Dai

If you would rather be guided through the ten minutes than read instructions, Master Dai teaches the daily practice step by step in the Onenergy app. Pick one picture, gather the power, take one step today, and let your own week show you how manifesting works.
