Facts vs. Truth: What Science Can Measure and What It Can’t

Modern science is extraordinarily good at collecting facts. That is not the same thing as arriving at truth — and understanding the limits of science is the real starting point for taking a practice like qigong seriously.

Point your arm at “up”

Try this: raise your arm right now and point straight up at the sky. Every human being who has ever lived would point the same way you just did, without a moment’s hesitation — everyone agrees on where up is.

Now consider that someone doing the same thing in another country, on the opposite side of a round planet, is pointing their arm in a completely different direction in actual space. Two people both correctly pointing “up” have their arms aimed apart from each other, out into the sky. So where, exactly, is up? There is no up. There is no down. Up was never truth — it was a condition, produced by the gravity of one particular planet, and for an entire lifetime it looked exactly like a law.

The sun that never rose

For thousands of years, every human being watched the sun rise in the east. They measured it, predicted it to the minute, built calendars around it. All of humanity verified that fact daily, for the whole of recorded history.

The sun does not rise. The Earth turns. A fact that every person alive confirmed, every single day, for millennia, was still not true. That is worth sitting with. Consensus and repetition are not the same thing as truth. They are just very convincing facts.

The temperature that depends on where you’re standing

Water boils at one hundred degrees Celsius — two hundred and twelve degrees Fahrenheit — in a laboratory at sea level. Climb a tall mountain and it boils closer to ninety degrees Celsius. Go high enough, and water will boil at roughly the temperature of your own blood.

Which number is the real fact? None of them, on their own. Each one is a condition — true only inside the specific arrangement a scientist set up to measure it. When a textbook states that water boils at one hundred degrees, it usually leaves off the second half of the sentence: under these particular conditions.

A solid table that is mostly empty space

Knock on the table in front of you. It’s solid — your knuckles just handed you a fact. Look closely enough at that same table, down at the scale of its atoms, and it turns out to be almost entirely empty space. Solid is true at the size of a human hand. It is not true of the universe underneath it.

None of these examples are tricks or contradictions. Up, the sunrise, boiling water, a solid table — every one of them is a fact: measured, repeatable, agreed on by everyone who checks. Not one of them is truth in the deeper sense. Each is a condition, true inside a box the size of one human being, standing on one planet, in one century.

What modern science actually studies

Modern science, remarkable as it is, largely studies the facts inside that box — what has already happened, and what its current instruments can detect. That is an enormous and useful territory. It built medicine, physics, and the device this article is being read on. But it is also a young tool, only about three hundred years old, and it keeps having to rebuild its own certainties. Newton’s laws were treated as absolute truth for two centuries, until Einstein showed they were one room inside a much larger house.

Practices like qigong developed by asking a different question — not what happens under these conditions, but what rule holds true regardless of the conditions. Not the fact that changes when you leave the room, but the pattern underneath it that does not. That is a different kind of inquiry than a laboratory measurement, and it does not compete with the laboratory. It simply starts somewhere else.

This isn’t an argument against science

None of this is a case for throwing out measurement, evidence, or careful thinking — quite the opposite. It is a case for being honest about where a young, narrow tool’s authority actually ends, instead of quietly assuming it has already mapped everything real. Keep the skepticism. Just aim it at the right target: not at whether something can be measured yet, but at whether it can be tested honestly at all.

Why this distinction is more than philosophy

This is not an abstract debate for a classroom. It matters directly for how you weigh any claim, including claims about qigong. If you assume that anything unmeasured by current instruments must be false, you are treating a three-hundred-year-old tool as though it already reached the edge of reality. History suggests otherwise, repeatedly. Germ theory waited centuries after people first noticed that some illnesses spread person to person. Continental drift was dismissed by geologists for decades before plate tectonics became the accepted model. In both cases, the underlying truth did not change while it waited for the box to get bigger. Only the measurement caught up.

Qigong may be a similar case, or it may not be — that is exactly the honest uncertainty this article is trying to preserve. What is not honest is treating “we haven’t measured it yet” as though it meant “it isn’t real.” Those are two different sentences, and the difference between them is the whole argument.
