How Often Should You Practise Qigong? Why Daily Practice Matters More Than Getting It Perfect

How often should you practise qigong? The honest answer is less about intensity and more about a simple daily plan — plus what a full year of mornings can build.

One question comes up more than almost any other from people who have just started: how often should you practise qigong? Is once a week enough. Is a long session on the weekend worth more than several short ones spread through the week. The honest answer has less to do with intensity than most people expect walking in, and everything to do with something covered earlier in this series — gong is a pile, built one morning at a time, and a pile only gets deeper when mornings keep arriving one after another.

So how often should you practise qigong?

Every day, at the same time. Not because more is automatically better in every pursuit under the sun — because of what gong specifically is built from, and how easily a good intention gets quietly talked out of itself by the end of a busy week.

The same time matters because it removes a decision that would otherwise have to be made fresh every single morning. Anything you decide fresh each day — should I practise now, or after breakfast, or later tonight instead — is something you will eventually decide against, usually on the one morning you are tired or running late for something else. Fix the time in advance, and that daily decision disappears along with the daily chance to talk yourself out of it.

Keep the session short enough that you will actually do it, day after day, without dread. Ten minutes you keep every single day is worth more than forty minutes you enthusiastically start and then abandon by the second week. And pick one routine and stay with it for a good long while — gong builds through repetition of the same thing, so five different routines tried once each leave you with almost nothing solid to show for any of them.

Finally, finish properly every time. A practice that stops abruptly, the moment the timer goes off, is missing its last step — bringing the qi back down and settling it before you actually close. That closing step has a name and a full explanation of its own, covered in Shou Gong: Why You Must Close Every Qigong Practice.

Direction matters as much as days

Frequency alone is not the whole story here, and it is worth saying plainly. As covered in the previous post in this series, gong keeps whatever direction you actually repeat morning after morning, not what you intended on your best days, and that direction is genuinely hard to see from inside your own practice while you are living it. So the plan above — same time, short, one routine, closed properly every session — is what makes daily practice worth having in the first place, rather than daily repetition of a habit quietly pointed somewhere you would never have chosen on purpose if you could see it clearly.

A year of mornings

Do this consistently for a full year, and you end up with something nobody else can hand you, no matter how much they might want to. It came entirely out of your own mornings, and it belongs to you the way nothing borrowed or bought outright ever quite does. Somewhere along the way, almost without noticing the exact moment, you stop being someone who does qigong occasionally and become someone who has gong — a real skill built the same way every skill has ever been built, minute by minute, morning by morning, with nothing exotic involved.

The Onenergy App keeps a running count of this without you having to track anything yourself on paper. Open it and look at your qi points. That number goes up on the mornings you practise and stays exactly where it is on the mornings you skip, with no judgment attached either way. It is, quite literally, a count of your mornings — the app has been quietly keeping your gong for you this entire time, whether you noticed it or not.

For a full year of mornings — Annual VIP

There is a membership built around exactly this kind of year, called Annual VIP. While it is active, everything in the app opens up to you — every preparatory class, every bell sound, every background music track, and any premium sounds added over the course of your particular year. You also earn double qi on every single practice, plus bonus tokens along the way, all counted automatically. It runs for a full year specifically because gong is counted in mornings, and a year holds three hundred and sixty-five of them, one after another.

There is no need to work out a number here on this page — what it costs is listed plainly on the VIP page inside the app itself, ready whenever you want to look. To get started, the Onenergy App is free to download: search for Onenergy in your app store, or go to onenergyqigong.com, where the link sits right on the page. Once you are in, open the app and look for the VIP page, and everything you need to decide is right there in front of you.

Put tomorrow morning on the pile. That is how often you should practise qigong — and, as plans go, it is also the entire plan.
