The oldest map of how anything comes to exist
In the Dao De Jing there is a short sequence that functions as one of the oldest maps we have of how existence unfolds: dao sheng yi, yi sheng er, er sheng san, san sheng wan wu. In English: the Dao gives birth to One. One gives birth to Two. Two gives birth to Three. And Three gives birth to the ten thousand things — an old way of saying everything there is, every object and creature and event in the world.
Read quickly, it can sound like abstract cosmology. Read slowly, it is a description of division. Before there were two of anything — before hot and cold, before you and me, before this and that — there was a single, undivided starting point. Everything that exists now is what that starting point became once it began dividing.
The One is hunyuan qi
The tradition has a name for that undivided starting point: hunyuan qi, the original, undivided qi. Before anything split into distinct categories, there was one energy, whole and undivided. That is the One in dao sheng yi. Everything that exists — every stone, every breath, every living thing — came out of that One and, in this understanding, still is that One, simply arranged in a particular way.
This is worth sitting with, because it reframes what qi actually is. Qi is not only the energy running through your body, distinct from the air around you or the ground beneath you. At the level of hunyuan qi, the air, the ground, and the body all trace back to the same undivided source. What differs is not the source — it is the level, the particular arrangement each thing has settled into.
